8 Miles In My New Shoes

Well not 8 miles today, 3 on Monday and 5 today. My shins hurt a little bit more today then they did on Monday but still not like they had been hurting before the new shoes.

Todays Stats ...

Run Time: 01:13:00
Run Distance: 5.01 mi
Avg Pace: 14:34/mi

Have I mentioned the hills around here? It's like I was running on a nonstop hill. Ok, I know that logically I ran downhill at some point but that's not very helpful after running up the hill in the first place. I ran out 5 miles and then had Jason come and pick me up. We drove back the route I took and he even mentioned the hills. There was one stretch on Bever that was about 1.6 miles that is a steady 2% grade uphill. Then there were two sections, East Post Hill and Cottage Grove Hill, that had about an 8% grade. Ouch ... especially since the Cottage Grove Hill was the last 0.5 miles of my 5 mile run. I'm fixin to go and take a picture of it tomorrow so that I can post it on here. My killer hill. I would seriously love to map out the elevation of my training runs. That would be neat to see.

Only 2 more training runs in my 4th week of training, 3 miles on Friday and 8 miles on Sunday. Ironically, when I first started training I was all about the short 3 mile runs (never ever thought I would say that) and the long runs were just something I had to get out of the way. Now I am actually looking forward to the long runs more so then the short runs. This running is a crazy sport!

It's All In The Shoes

Everything I have read and every runner I have talked to has emphasized getting the right shoes for your feet. I think they may be right. I bought a new pair of shoes, Asics GT-2100, over the weekend. Actually it's the same brand and model I already had just a whole lot newer. Yesterday's run did not leave me with the aching shin splints that I have been plagued with the last couple of weeks. Oh, I hope it is something as easy as a new pair of shoes ... shin splints are not fun!!!

3 Miles ..... phewwww

I just got back from my first 3 mile run of my 4th training week.

Run Time: 40:31
Run Distance: 3.00 Miles
Avg Pace: 13:29/mi
Best Pace: 5:40/mi (I don't believe it!!!)

It would have been faster except for the red lights I had to wait for. Traffic is definately alot busier at 4:00 pm then it is at 1:00 pm. And let me tell you, no matter what direction you are trying to get to my house from you are going uphill. I have no idea how this is possible but I swear that I'm running uphill at least 75% of the time when running from my home. And I'm sure this won't be the last time I mention this.

This week's schedule:

Monday - 3 Miles
Tuesday - 5 Miles
Thursday - 3 Miles
Sunday - 8 Miles

I would normally run my long run on a Saturday but Megan is starting a new preschool schedule next week, MWF from 12 - 2:30. So my new running schedule will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with breaks on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. It will work!

My running route took me through Bever park today. My very first run back in the June'ish time frame, long before a thought of a marathon ever entered my head, was a very labored run to Bever park, 1.3 Miles as calculated by a car odometer. These days my shortest training run is 3 miles and that's only for another week. Never thought I would be saying that 2 months ago. It was very exhilerating as I ran to the park ... and then passed the park and kept on going.

I am a Marathoner!!!

Why Now?

So why, after all these years of telling myself that I am going to set up an online journal did I finally just jump in and do it? I have a very good reason behind this, you see. I am in training for a marathon!!!

This fact is still very amazing to me. I have spent several years telling myself and others, I just want to want to run ... but I really don't want to. But back in July I signed up for Weight Watchers in attempt to get rid of these extra pounds that just keep hanging around. Inspired by one of my best friends, Christie (a marathoner), I started walking/running in addition to Weight Watchers.

Then for my 30th :( birthday I received a couple of gifts that would really get this ball a'rolling. The first was a Garmin Forerunner 201 that my wonderfully supportive dh purchased for me. This handy little gadget is a gps unit that runners use to track their mileage, pace, average pace, lap pace etc while they are running. The second was a book that Christie sent me, The Non-Runners Marathon Guide. This book is awesome ... it has normal everyday people who do not or in some cases do not even like to run running a marathon in 16 weeks. Within days of receiving this book, I decided to train for a marathon. I even have one all picked out. The Philadelphia Marathon on November 20th.

So I am officially in training for a marathon. On Saturday, after running 7 miles I felt great. I spent all day telling Jason how wonderful it was, and started thinking that it would be a good idea to have a place to write down the facts and feelings of a run so that I can come back to it later.

So hence, the creation of my very own blog out here in cyber space.

Whoooohooo for me!!!
